Leaving aside the question of whether it's misleading to describe the swan as an animal, 'swan' is not a species; it's a family. Most swans belong to the genus Cygnus, and there are seven or eight species. Collins Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe lists three of them: the mute swan, Bewick's swan, and the whooper swan.
